Shopify Profit Calculator
Shopify does not take a commission on sales, which is why the platform fee line is smaller than on a marketplace. The costs you actually feel are payment processing, the monthly subscription, apps, and the price of acquiring each customer.
This calculator converts your monthly plan into a cost per order, adds payment processing and shipping, and shows the profit that survives. If you want to know how a different plan changes your margin, change the per-order cost figure.

How Shopify fees work
Payment rates depend on country and plan. Enter the rate you actually pay rather than the marketing example, otherwise the margin will look better than reality.
| Fee | Typical rate | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace commission | 0% | Shopify does not take a cut of each sale. |
| Payment processing (Basic, US) | 2.9% + $0.30 | Rate depends on your plan and country. |
| Monthly subscription | from $39 | Divide the plan and app costs by your monthly order count and enter that as the other per-order cost. |
| Third-party payment fee | up to 2% | Charged when you use a payment gateway that is not Shopify Payments. |
| Ad spend | your CAC | Enter your customer acquisition cost per order as a percentage of revenue. |
Worked example
A typical order priced at $54.00 costs you $17.00 in product and $7.20 to ship and pack.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Buyer pays | $54.00 |
| Total platform fees | -$11.59 |
| Product, shipping and other costs | -$26.38 |
| Net profit | $16.03 (29.69% margin) |
| Break-even price | $33.20 |
What sellers get wrong on Shopify
- Pricing against the headline fee only. The commission is rarely the whole cost: fixed fees, payment processing and advertising add several points on top.
- Forgetting what shipping really costs. If you charge the buyer less than the label and packaging actually cost, every sale quietly loses money.
- Ignoring returns. A 3% return rate on a 20% margin product removes a sixth of your profit. Put it in the reserve field.
- Never checking the break-even price. Knowing the lowest price you can accept on an offer is the difference between a negotiation and a loss.
Shopify fee calculator FAQ
Does Shopify take a percentage of each sale?
No. Shopify charges a monthly subscription instead, plus payment processing. If you use a third-party gateway rather than Shopify Payments, an additional fee of up to 2% applies.
How do I include the monthly Shopify plan in my profit per order?
Divide your total monthly cost (plan plus apps) by the number of orders you expect that month and enter the result as the other per-order cost. At 100 orders per month a $39 plan is $0.39 per order.
What is a good profit margin for a Shopify store?
After advertising, most direct-to-consumer stores target 20-30% net margin. Below 15% you have very little room for returns, chargebacks or a rise in ad costs.
Are Shopify payment fees lower on higher plans?
Slightly. Moving up a plan reduces the online card rate by a few tenths of a percent, which only pays off once your volume is high enough to cover the higher subscription.
